In his practice, Dr. Wienerroither works both as a contracted doctor (treatment billed directly to public insurance) and as a private doctor, so diagnosis and the preliminary examination can be billed through your public insurer. He performs operations for all public insurers and for private patients. Patients with private or supplementary insurance pay no additional costs. For publicly insured patients, reimbursement of the operation depends on the insurer: BVAEB members are usually reimbursed in full, while the ÖGK (Österreichische Gesundheitskasse, Austria’s largest public health insurer), SVS and the other insurers reimburse only part of the cost.

The operation is generally pain-free. It is performed under anaesthetic eye drops, with no injections and no general anaesthesia. You are awake and can easily cooperate. A slight foreign-body sensation on the day of surgery is normal and fades quickly.

No. Cataract surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. You can go home the same day. It is important to arrange for someone to take you home, as you should not fully rely on the operated eye immediately after the procedure.

That depends on the chosen lens. With a monofocal standard lens covered by public insurance, glasses are usually needed for near or distance vision. Premium lenses (multifocal, EDOF) can cover several distances and clearly reduce dependence on glasses, though not always eliminate it entirely. Dr. Wienerroither advises you individually at the preliminary examination.

With public insurance, a referral from your GP or another specialist is advisable but not strictly required. Private patients and self-payers can book an appointment directly.
