Cataract: why colours look faded

The new wall paint looked friendly and fresh in the shop. At home on the wall, the same shade suddenly appears dull and yellow-tinged. Behind irritations like these, it is sometimes not the lighting but your own eye. Cataract (a clouding of the eye’s natural lens) changes not only the sharpness of vision but also the perception of colour. The clouding lens settles over the image like a yellowish filter.

This article explains why colour vision changes with cataract, which forms of lens clouding shift colours most strongly and what you can expect after the operation.

Why the clouded lens changes colours

The healthy lens of the eye is largely clear. With cataract it discolours, particularly in the common form with clouding in the lens core. This clouding often takes on a yellowish to brownish tint. Light has to pass through this filter before it reaches the retina.

Blue and violet tones are filtered out more strongly than warm tones such as yellow or red. The whole of vision thereby takes on a slightly yellow-tinged overall cast. This process unfolds so slowly that it often goes unnoticed in everyday life for a long time. The brain gradually gets used to the altered colour impression and compensates for it unconsciously.

Which form of cataract shifts colours most strongly?

Cataract does not develop the same way in everyone. In the most common form, nuclear cataract, it is above all the lens core that clouds over with a yellowish to brownish tint. This form changes colour perception particularly clearly, since all incoming light has to pass through the discoloured core.

Other forms behave differently. In cortical cataract, spoke-shaped opacities develop in the outer zone of the lens. They mainly cause glare and scattered light; the colour shift is usually smaller. Much the same applies to subcapsular cataract at the back of the lens: here too, glare sensitivity and reading difficulties dominate rather than altered colours.

During the examination with the slit lamp, a special microscope for the eye, your ophthalmologist can tell which form is present. That also explains why some patients report a strong colour shift while others barely notice one.

How those affected describe the change

Many people only notice the altered colour perception in hindsight, after the operation. Common descriptions include:

  • “White paper looked slightly yellowish before; now it is brilliantly white.”
  • “Blues come out much more intensely now than they used to.”
  • “I had no idea how much the colours had changed.”
  • “It feels as if I had taken off a pair of tinted glasses.”

This realisation almost always arrives only after the procedure. Beforehand, the creeping loss of colour intensity is hardly possible to sense consciously.

A typical example from practice: some patients only notice the change when buying new clothes or wall paint. The shade chosen in the shop suddenly looks different at home under familiar lighting. When comparing photos taken before and after the operation, too, many only spot the difference in direct comparison.

Is altered colour vision a warning sign on its own?

Paler-looking colours alone do not yet justify an urgent assessment. Combined with other signs, however, the picture becomes clearer. Watch additionally for blurred vision, glare sensitivity or frequent changes of glasses. If several of these symptoms appear together, that points to a progressing cataract.

An eye examination with the slit lamp reliably establishes whether a clouding of the lens is present. Other causes of altered colour vision, such as certain retinal conditions, can be ruled out at the same time. Do not put off the appointment until your vision is clearly restricted in everyday life.

Colour vision after the operation

After the clouded lens has been replaced with a clear artificial lens, many patients report a distinctly stronger impression of colour. White looks whiter, blues appear more luminous. Some find this unusually intense at first, but get used to it within a few days.

Some artificial lenses deliberately filter out a small share of the blue light spectrum, similar to the natural, slightly yellowish lens. That makes for natural vision without losing this filter effect entirely. Clear artificial lenses without this filter, by contrast, let more blue light through and tend to be used in younger patients. Which version suits you is something you discuss with your ophthalmologist as part of the preliminary examination.

Do you notice yourself that colours are fading?

Usually not directly, since the change happens very slowly. Many only notice it in hindsight, after the operation.

Do colours become unnaturally garish after surgery?

No, vision becomes more natural, not artificially boosted. The yellowish filter of the clouded lens simply falls away.

Does the colour change affect both eyes equally?

Not necessarily. Cataract often develops at different speeds in the two eyes, so the colour shift can be stronger on one side.

How quickly does colour perception change after the operation?

Many patients notice the stronger colour impression on the very first day after surgery. It takes several weeks, though, for vision to stabilise completely.
